Shantytown
Rutherglen Road, Greymouth, West Coast

Replica 1880's Village.

Shantytown
"Shantytown Village"

The replica town is situated on the site of a gold-rush. About 140 years ago the forest rang to the sound of picks and shovels as prospectors swarmed across the region searching for gold.

Explore the heart, heritage and culture of the Coast and early miners among this premier attraction. The village includes many thousands of relics from the past each carefully laid out for your optimum viewing pleasure. But Shantytown is much more than just a living museum …

"Kaitangata, one of the Shantytown Steam Engines"

Steam Train Rides

Infants Creek Railway follows a former bush tram line that was used to haul logs to a timber mill. Shantytown has several Steam engines which are housed in the massive workshop previously used at the now defunct Blackball Coal Mine.

Two of these engines are used on the line. Ride the line past the sawmill and on to the mining area where you are guaranteed to find 'colour.'
