New Zealand Seasons
Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring and the Tourist Season
The north of New Zealand is subtropical and the south temperate. The warmest months are naturally Summer (December, January and February,) with the coldest being in the Southern Winter (June, July and August.)
"4 Seasons in one Day."
are not just the title and lyrics of a song.
Because of New Zealand's narrow rugged landscape the weather can change dramatically and very quickly at any time of the year. When venturing into our native forests and bush at any time of the year always be prepared.
- Wear good walking shoes or tramping boots.
- On day trips or longer carry extra warm and water proof clothing.
- Do not undertake day trips or longer alone, tramp with company.
- On day trips or longer carry some food and water with you.
- Do not take un-neccessary risks, stay to the paths and trails.
- On day trips or longer always let a reliable contact know your intentions.
The average maximum temperature ranges between 20-30°C and in winter between 10-15°C.
While these temperatures are the norm, the weather in New Zealand does change unexpectedly as cold fronts or tropical cyclones quickly blow in. Please be prepared, especially if you are going hiking or doing other outdoor activities.
The country does occassionally experience extremes, the highest recorded temperature was 45°C, while the lowest recorded sits at -22°C. You can check on weather conditions in New Zealand on the New Zealand Met Service website at www.metservice.com/national/
