Drive Safely

Four Mile bridge, South of Charleston, Buller New Zealand.
New Zealand roads often wind through hills and around mountains, crossing one lane bridges

Towns and cities within New Zealand may look close to each other on a map however the actual distance may be hundreds of kilometres around lakes and mountains as you follow winding roads up and down through our wonderful hills and mountain ranges crossing many one lane bridges on the journey. Please allow yourself ample time to complete your travel in comfort without long sprints between localities.

While some of the guides include 5 to 6 hours of actual driving we do not recommend combining the guides or itineraries to more than this for safe enjoyable self drive holidays. The second major cause of death and injuries on New Zealand roads is speed and fatigue. Slow down and live to tell of your travel when visiting New Zealand.

Drive safely, drive with care and consideration for all other motorists. Yes, even those who do not show you the same care and consideration.

Distances and Times.

The distances and times stated are based on travel at an average of 80 to 90kmph in good weather and light to medium traffic, allowing for a break of 10 minutes from travelling in each full hour.

There are many factors beyond the authors and our control that can and will impact upon the distance travelled and time taken to complete any journey. Read more >

New Zealand roads include single lane bridges
One Lane bridges may slow your journey.

Allow extra time for:
1.   Sight seeing.
2.   Heavier traffic conditions.
3.   Inclement weather.
4.   and any other needs you have.

Self-drive holidays are one of the most scenic, popular and enjoyable ways to experience New Zealand, her scenery and people. New Zealand roads are mostly scenic and traffic is low when compared to international standards. However if you are used to driving in the city, please take care when driving open country roads. We hope the following Driving Tips and Rules will assist you in understanding New Zealand Driving Rules and Roads.
